Important changes are coming to Google’s search algorithm.
Google announced that as of April 21st, they will include more mobile friendly websites in search results. Google states that "...users will find it easier to get relevant, high-quality search results that are optimized for their devices."
The changes that are being made will affect searches worldwide, in all different languages.
Last year we reported that for the first time ever, more than 50% of traffic to ecommerce websites is now coming from mobile devices. It's no surprise then that Google is making a greater effort to serve up results that provide a better experience for the searcher.
How to Prepare for these Changes
If you’re running a website, Google recommends following these steps to ensure that your site is ready in anticipation of the upcoming changes:
- Take a look at Google’s guide to mobile-friendly websites
- Run your website through the mobile-friendly test tool
- Use webmaster tools to generate a mobile usability report
The rise of mobile traffic on the web is something we've been tracking for a few years now. Since then we've made sure that all of our themes are responsive and recently introduced a new responsive checkout for all merchants.
Shopify merchants can also quickly and easily view how their store looks across different screen sizes using the new storefront editor:
